Helping a New born feral Kitten.

If while out walking or hiking you come across a feral queen that has just given birth and left the kittens to die here's how to save their life by becoming their surrogate mother.

1. Is the after birth is still attached to the kitten by the umbilical cord?
This should be detached from the kitten by shredding the cord not cutting, as cutting will cause a bleed.
Should a bleed occur tie the cord near to the kittens body with sewing thread. The area must then be bathed with an antiseptic and cotton- wool.

2. Check all airways are clear and free from dirt. Any dirt can be carefully removed with warm water and cotton wool, make sure the cotton is only damp not soaking wet.

3. Check all over kitten for fly strike (fly eggs), ears, nose, mouth and back end. If fly strikes are  found all the eggs must be removed. Any eggs left will soon hatch into maggots.

4. The kitten must be kept warm and dry. If possible a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and covered with a cozy blanket in a deep cardboard box. NEVER in an airing cupboard!

5. In the event that none of the above can be done. Put kitten against a warm part of your body preferably on the chest as body heat will keep it warm, until you get professional help. Good Luck.
