Living with the Feral's

To day Monday 7 October 2002 a number of feral cats are sneezing, flue virus is is going to run rampant through the colony. 

Crisis what to do?

Friday 11 October - Three feral's coughing and sneezing.

Monday 14 October - Five feral's showing signs of cat flue - very bad.

Wednesday 16 October - All cats showing signs of flue - made appointment with the vet.

Friday 17 October - Took three of the worst cases to vet today - verdict - cat flue - watery eyes- bleeding nose - dribbling.

Saturday 18 October - Kittens showing signs of flue- another appointment with vets for Monday.

Sunday 19 October - all 22 cats/kittens showing signs of flue .

 Monday 20 October - Took kittens  to vets - Tom, Jerry, miniature -  cat flue - Squeak not showing any signs of flue.

Tuesday 21 October - Snake, and India, going to vet along with Breezer who is to have her stitches out.

Friday 24 October - Feral's responding to the powder introduced into their food. 

Sunday 26 October - Snake and India has started to get worse - back to the vet I think.

Monday 27 October - Snake and India off to the vets - India given tablets - Snake is bad - badly dehydrated, mouth full of ulcers, sneezing, mucus coming out his nose - vet is very worried - insists on giving him a test for Aids and Leukaemia - Great news results are negative - The vet has diagnosed a bad case of pox ( herpes ) - This is the cause of his dehydration. Vet say's he need's immediate medical attention - anesthetized and hooked up to a drip - decided not to put him through this - took Snake home with us - Up all night - syringing liquid into his mouth every 1/2 hour, liquid food every hour. Three o'clock fell asleep woke up at five Snake had cuddled up to us purring away - gave him more food and water - fell asleep waiting to feed him again - woke  up at nine - no Snake called him - He came out from under the cupboard - showed him the syringe he said no and went to his bowl and licked it clean.

Tuesday 28 October - Took him back to the Sanctuary and gave him a whole tin of special food mixed with water - showed him the syringe - he ate the lot.

Wednesday 29 October - Snake is eating and drinking normally - crisis over - feral's still responding to drugs.

Saturday 2 November - Another crisis - Cannot take Snake to vets for further treatment - Guernsey Animal Aid refuses to pay any further charges for veterinary treatment of their feral cat colony  - Isabelle Vets Ltd enclose the bill for October's treatment's and have demanded immediate payment of fees - any further treatment must be paid for at time of consultation. ( copy of letter from Isabelle Vets available on request) - worried about the destruction of the colony now no more support from Animal Aid.
